Object name(s):
Elizabeth Manuscript
Brief description:
Handwritten on parchment, this document is typical of the era: paper did not start to appear in Western Europe until the 1500s, and was not commonly used until the end of the century. Parchment, normally made from sheep or cow skin, is stretched over a frame and treated until a smooth surface is created. If you look closely, hair follicles are faintly visible on this example. Only certain members of society were able to read and write in early-modern England, with literacy levels at around 20% for men in the 16th century. This document was likely written by a clerk, and probably tracks legal proceedings
