- Kadokeshi plastic eraser
- Object name(s):
- office equipment; eraser
- Brief description:
- A Kadokeshi 28 corner eraser, designed by Hideo Kanbara in 2001 and manufactured by Kokuyo Co. Ltd, a Japanese stationery and furniture company. Kado translates as corner and keshi means erase. Attempting to solve the problem of quickly worn corners on a traditionally shaped rectangular or cubed eraser, Hideo Kanbara created this innovative form consisting of ten staggered cubes. The rubber material has been specifically engineered for increased strength to support each cube. Winner of the Kokuyo Design Award in 2002, jumbo, mini and keychain variants were produced.

- Object name(s):
- audio visual accessory; record storage
- Brief description:
- An LP (12 inch record) storage rack designed by Conran Associates for Crayonne Ltd, a subsidiary of Airfix Plastics. Injection moulded in acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), this beige coloured stand dates to the 1970s. The range included both record and cassette storage in the same shape and dimensions and in a variety of colours so that the racks were interchangeable. By turning the stands, different storage arrangements could be made for decorative effect, see AIBDC : 008861.1 - 008861.9 for other examples.

- Twist water bottle, 2 of 2
- Object name(s):
- environmental products; food and drink packaging; reduced resource use; bottle
- Brief description:
- Working alongside Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP), the designers Kinneir Dufort created this 'twist' bottle for the Abbey Well Spring Water range. It is 100% recyclable, contains 28% less plastic than the previous design, requires less energy to make, transport and recycle and weighs just 8g. The design of the bottle encompasses a subtle inclusion of structural ribs in an 'Arrow' design, reflecting the globally recognised recycling logo and guiding consumers on twisting the bottle after use to encourage recycling. This example has no label and is twisted to demonstrate the end of use compacted shape intended to reduce environmental impact. The bottle was Highly Commended at the 2017 Horners Bottlemakers Awards.

- Text:
- The 'Nova' range of stackable plastic tableware included cups, saucers, plates, bowls, sugar bowls and jugs in four different colours; red, yellow, blue and brown. The bi-injection, two-colour moulding system of the 'Nova' range was a new technique - previously only used in the automotive industry for moulding red, amber and clear plastic rear light covers. Innovative in design terms, all the decoration occurred during the manufacturing process. Though this type of plastic was comparatively expensive, it was very rigid and resistant to staining, with high thermal resistance and good colouring properties.
During the 1960s a general fascination with new materials helped break down the traditional response to plastic as a cheap substitute for more luxury materials. Instead it was treated as a quality material in its own right. The 'Nova' range won the Duke of Edinburgh's Prize for Elegant Design in 1968. The judges especially commended the simplicity of production and the attempts to meet consumer requirements. Designs created an idea of the 1960s kitchen as a small area full of high-tech equipment. Modern-looking, space-saving, and stackable, 'Nova' appealed to designers as well as consumers. The range was retailed through image-conscious design stores like Habitat and Heal's.
