- Martyn Rowlands trained at the Central School in London. He specialised in plastics. He was one of the first trained industrial designers to work with British industry after the Second World War. He worked first for Bakelite Ltd, then set up the design department at Ekco Plastics, where his products won a number of design awards. In 1959 he left Ekco to work as an independent design consultant. This was at a time when the idea of the design consultancy in Britain was still in its infancy. One important commission in 1966 was the popular telephone known as the ‘Trimphone’, which won a Design Council Award.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Rowlands continued to design plastics for domestic use. He had various clients, including Boots, for which he designed nursery products.

- Text:
- The Valentine, created for the Italian brand Olivetti, was designed in collaboration with the British designer, Perry King and entered production in 1969. It was not a commercial success. The Valentine was technically mediocre, expensive and failed to sell to a mass audience, yet still became a design classic. Valentines can be found in the permanent collections of London's Design Museum and New York's, Museum of Modern Art as well as the V&A. The product's critical success was unhindered by its functional limitations because its design focused on its emotional connection to users as it did on its practical ease of use.

- Yellow Midwinter Modern plate
- Object name(s):
- tableware; plate
- Brief description:
- A yellow melamine Midwinter Modern square plate with rounded corners, which won the Council of Industrial Design 'Design of the Year' award in 1957. Its designers, A.H.Woodfall and John Vale, were members of the British Industrial Plastics Product Design Unit, Oldbury Birmingham. Melmex, the material from which the set is made, was British Industrial Plastics Chemicals Limited's tradename for melamine. This kind of tableware was popular during the 50s and 60s for its bright colours and 'unbreakable' quality. It later lost favour due to the fact it stained easily and so is now mainly used for picnics. Information has been added to this record as a result of the Ten Most Wanted research project: http://www.10most.org.uk/artefact/midwinter-tea-set, where aditional information relating to it can be found.

Rowlands also designed disposable meal trays, cutlery and tableware for the transport industry - both British European Airways (BEA, 1967) and British Rail.
