- Title:
- The Choristers
- Object name(s):
- graphite, watercolour and gouache
- Brief description:
- Related to Burne-Jones' designs for the stained-glass windows in the apse of Holy Trinity Church, Meole Brace, Shropshire, made by Morris & Co.; either preparatory cartoons, or (more probably) re-workings of the designs to Burne-Jones' greater satisfaction. The Meole Brace windows date from 1871.
- Collection:
- Mercer Art Gallery
- Comments:
- Previous information: Many of Burne-Jones's subjects were taken from Arthurian legends, or made visual reference to medieval subject matters, as in this painting. The Pre-Raphaelites were inspired by poems by Keats and Tennyson, amongst other set in idealised past times. Their images often have moral, religious and historical connotations, amplifying the narrative through symbolism. Many of Burne-Jones's subjects were drawn from Arthurian legends. These two roundels are the designs for a stained glass window in Holy Trinity, Meole Brace near Shrewsbury. The Choristers has an idyllic medieval mood, which softly alludes to musicality and tranquility.

- Title:
- The New Girl
- Object name(s):
- oil
- Brief description:
- The New Girl; Schlesinger became a pupil in Dusseldorf Academy under Rudolf Jordan, and later worked in Paris before settling there. He gained a reputation as a painter of genre scene, of which this work is a good example. Tapping into a strong market for 'nostalgic' genre subjects, it shows a little girl's first day at school. She is introduced to the white-haired school teacher and stands shyly with her sister or mother behind her. A few of the otehr young pupils look on, but most ignore her in favour of their own activities.
