- The New Girl
- Object name(s):
- oil
- Brief description:
- The New Girl; Schlesinger became a pupil in Dusseldorf Academy under Rudolf Jordan, and later worked in Paris before settling there. He gained a reputation as a painter of genre scene, of which this work is a good example. Tapping into a strong market for 'nostalgic' genre subjects, it shows a little girl's first day at school. She is introduced to the white-haired school teacher and stands shyly with her sister or mother behind her. A few of the otehr young pupils look on, but most ignore her in favour of their own activities.
