- Yarnton Monument, Oxon
- Object name(s):
- 3-colour lithograph
- Brief description:
- This print dates from 1948; image adapted from an oil painting of 1947-8 in Tate [Acc. No. T03922]; see Tate website for discussion. One of Piper's first lithographs.
- Collection:
- Mercer Art Gallery
- Comments:
- 'Piper was a prolific designer, visual artist and writer on art. As a teenager he would cycle around his home county of Surrey sketching monuments and churches. This fascination with ancient England and Englishness continued and deepened throughout his life. His collaboration with the poet John Betjeman on the 'Shell Guides' drew on this keen sense of place and represents a quintessentially mid-twentieth century of the English landscape, suffused, at times, with an air of nostalgia. Like his friend Ravilious, he served as an Official War Artist and his work is represented in most major English art collections'.

- Title:
- Jack Laugher, Springboard Diver, the City of Leeds Diving Club, 2012
- Object name(s):
- c-type photograph
- Brief description:
- These works of art are composite photographs constructed from
images made by the photographer Tim Smith working with young
divers in Leeds and Harrogate.
Tim was asked to capture the movement of the dive into water, a commission that marked a departure from his usual ways of
working as a documentary photographer whose method is to
construct stories out of individual moments. In order to make
these images, Tim shot short sequences of the divers in action
from a variety of different viewpoints. He then composed them
to describe the movement of the dive and the interplay of light
and water.
