Comments:
'Piper was a prolific designer, visual artist and writer on art. As a teenager he would cycle around his home county of Surrey sketching monuments and churches. This fascination with ancient England and Englishness continued and deepened throughout his life. His collaboration with the poet John Betjeman on the 'Shell Guides' drew on this keen sense of place and represents a quintessentially mid-twentieth century of the English landscape, suffused, at times, with an air of nostalgia. Like his friend Ravilious, he served as an Official War Artist and his work is represented in most major English art collections'.
