- Title:
- 170mm Syclix
- Object name(s):
- medical; hospital equipment
- Brief description:
- A surgical instrument inspired by eminent surgeon John Wickham and designed by Random Design Ltd. This instrument was the winner of the 2006 Horner's Plastics Innovation and Design Award. Aiming to revolutionise minimally invasive surgical procedures the design eliminates the ring grip on conventional surgical instruments which can be restricting and tiring for surgeons. Control of the instrument is through rolling it with the forefinger and thumb and the jaws are controlled with minimal arm movement. Sovrin Plastics built the tooling and mould for the device and assembled the product.

- Airfix storage tub
- Object name(s):
- food storage; food container
- Brief description:
- A clear, polystyrene (PS) storage tub with a green polyethylene (PE) lid, manufactured by Airfix Plastics Ltd in the 1960s. The company was originally founded in 1939 by Hungarian businessman Nicholas Kove, who began making rubber toys but then turned his attention to plastics when rubber supplies were diverted for military use during WWII. In 1947 he introduced a range of cellulose acetate combs and in 1949 developed a model tractor in kit form, at first in cellulose acetate and later in a more stable polystyrene. The company steadily expanded their range of model kits so that by the late 1960s, the brand had become synonymous with plastics scale-models. However, throughout they were still producing other general plastics products such as homewares, games and toys. In 1972, David Sinigaglia, Managing Director of Airfix Industries, set up the design subsidiary Crayonne to try to improve the image of plastics, approaching Conran Associates to apply high design principles to everyday homewares (see AIBDC : 008800).

- Text:
- Martyn Rowlands trained at the Central School in London. He specialised in plastics. He was one of the first trained industrial designers to work with British industry after the Second World War. He worked first for Bakelite Ltd, then set up the design department at Ekco Plastics, where his products won a number of design awards. In 1959 he left Ekco to work as an independent design consultant. This was at a time when the idea of the design consultancy in Britain was still in its infancy. One important commission in 1966 was the popular telephone known as the ‘Trimphone’, which won a Design Council Award.
Rowlands's products for Ekco included tableware, nursery products, a baby bath with stand and a watering can. He developed products specifically to suit the qualities of plastic materials. He did this rather than simply carry across traditional forms.
