Brief description:: Sound Recording on Reel: RSD Craigmore. Library Transcript: Transcript. Summary: Mr Blair's grandfather moved to Bessbrook from Cookstown. In Bessbrook he was in charge of the village accommodation and housing stock. Mr Blair's father also worked in the linen trade. Harry was offered a job in the factory whenever his father passed away. At the age of 14 he started in the wages office. The weavers were paid weekly and their wages varied greatly. They were not only paid according to a piece rate, but some had money deducted for poor work and arriving late. Some workers also had their rent deducted from their pay packets. During WWII Bessbrook wove a lot of canvas and mercerised cotton for the MoD. In Sept 1942 Mr Blair was moved to Craigmore factory, a subsidiary of Bessbrook. He became factory manager in 1946. Craigmore is a small village on the Newry - Bessbrook tramway. Craigmore factory was a very old building. The age of the building was reflected in the working conditions. Craigmore wove mostly plain cloth and rough counts. They had some 200 shuttle looms. Craigmore was a satellite, or extension, of Bessbrook. All of the orders, including the yarn, were passed through from Bessbrook. The yarn was originally sent down from Bessbrook in hank form although in later years it was dressed in Bessbrook and transported on the beam. Water power remained important at Craigmore throughout Mr Blair's reign. The mill race was packed up by a pond and coal fired boilers. Craigmore never electrified and investment was minimal. The village consisted of approximately 50 houses. The nearest shop and amenities were in Bessbrook or Newry. There was, however, a small farm at Craigmore that belonged to the factory. Labour relations were excellent. The workers were drawn from Craigmore, Newry and Bessbrook. Several families had two or three generations of members working in the factory. The tramway was a lifeline up until it closed in the early 1950s. The rolling stock could run on the road or rails. The tram left Bessbrook every hour. The timetable was designed to facilitate workers getting in and out of Bessbrook/Craigmore. Workers paid full fare. There was no evening service. Although Mr Blair was factory manager, the manager at Bessbrook came down to discuss matters once a week. Mr Blair had little budgetary control. He could authorise expenditure on housing, but on all industrial or manufacturing matters had to refer to Bessbrook. Towards the mid- 1950s business began to falter. Craigmore was working week about and, being a satellite factory, had no independent customers. Craigmore only received decent orders when Bessbrook was at full capacity. Craigmore closed in 1959/60. The factory was sold and eventually burnt down in the early 1970s. It was never re-built. Mr Blair was moved back to Bessbrook to work in the costing office - his manager’s house was sold along with the factory. Costing was not something that Mr Blair took to and he was put in charge of the wages office where he had started off as a boy. Bessbrook had undergone a lot of changes. The weaving workforce had been greatly curtailed. With the introduction of Northrop automatic changing looms one weaver now looked after 6, as opposed to 2, looms. The belt drives had been replaced with individual electric motors and wages had risen dramatically. The method of calculating and recording wages, however, remained the same. Mr Blair left Bessbrook in c.1963 and left the textile trade altogether. He finished his working life in education.

Comments:: Biographical note in Sowden's notebook: "Mr James Hill is a very prominent citizen of Bradford in the industrial and political life of the city. He was born at Harden near Bingley in 1849 and, coming to Bradford when quite a boy, worked as a woolsorter until he was 18 years old. He served as an apprentice with Mr J Walker of Cheapside. While engaged as a starter he was making himself conversant with other processes in connection with the worsted industry. He afterwards commenced as well merchant with a capital of £50. In a couple of years he formed an alliance with Mr John Riddiough as a percentage partnership which continued for 16 years. In 1891 he commenced business on his own account and in addition to his wool merchanting adding that of combing industry. His success was great and in neither of his concerns have his workpeople known bad times but regular and steady employment. He is said to have been a friend of many firms who in time of financial trouble have had recourse to his helping hand. As his affairs succeeded he took into partnership his two sons who have assisted him and his various enterprises. As time passed on he was able to devote his attention and talents to matters of public interest, with honour to himself and to the city. A happy trait of his character is his full sense of the benefits he obtained from Sunday School associations in his youth, an appreciation which he practically demonstrated by seeking to repay his indebtedness to that source in 25 years service on the teaching staff. Mr Hill was made a Justice of the Peace in 1905. He was elected to the City Council as a Liberal for the Exchange Ward in 1898 at a by-election and in 1902 was returned with an increased majority. At the end of his term of office he retired from the Council for a time, but in 1907 he was returned unopposed for the Allerton Ward and throughout his chairmanship of the Tramways Committee he conducted the affair is with great ability and he can look back with pride to those years of progress and development in connection with the Bradford Tramways. He was the third Lord Mayor of Bradford, being elected in 1908. He has always been a generous contributor to the philanthropic monuments in Bradford and the neighbourhood. He was one of the company of Liberals who secured for the party the Bradford Daily Telegraph and was chairman of the Board of Directors. In 1908 Mr James Hill along with Sir James Roberts and Mr WA Whitehead became owners of the Yorkshire Observer with the express purpose of free trade influence. He was president of the Bradford Free Church Council when the National Free Church Council visited Bradford in 1904. Mr Hill married in 1875 the eldest daughter of Mr Joshua Knight of Allerton. There are three children of the marriage, two sons and one daughter. He is interested in farming and golf and chess and is one of the best travelled men in the city."

Object history note:: The painting was bequeathed to the V&A by A. R. D Robson in 2005. No other paintings were given to the museum at this date. When E.413-2007 was acquired the V&A had four other Oil Paintings by James Baker Pyne in the collection. Historical significance: Extract from Parkinson, Ronald, Catalogue of British Oil Paintings 1820-1860. Victoria & Albert Museum, HMSO, London, 1990. p. 234. “Born Bristol 5 December 1800. Articled to a legal attorney; taught himself painting. Exhibited seven works at the RA between 1836 and 1855, 28 at the BI 1828-63, and 194 at the SBA 1833-70 (elected Member 1842, and later Vice-President). Subjects principally landscapes, mainly river and lake scenes; his style was much influenced by J M W Turner. Travelled in Switzerland and Italy 1846, and Germany and Italy 1851. Published ‘Windsor, With Its Surrounding Scenery’ nd [1838-40], ‘The English Lake District (Manchester 1853), and ‘The Lake Scenery of England’ (1859). There are also several drawings and watercolours in the V&A collections. Died 29 July 1870; his studio sale was at Christie’s 25 February 1871.” Between 1839 and 1869 Pyne recorded his paintings in a series of account books which are now in the National Art Library (pressmarks 86.AA.15 and 86.AA.16). In a reply to a letter of enquiry from the previous owner of the painting from 3rd May 1984 Lionel Lambourne, Assistant Keeper, Department of Paintings wrote: “There are six or so paintings measuring 36 x 24 (inches) by Pyne, but the only two which seem to correspond in any way with your painting are in 1846. The others are Italian or German scenes. “162 The Ferry at Portmaddock” (but Pyne specifies a rainbow not present in your work) “179 The Menai Straits”. A letter to the previous owner from Mair Lees of the North Wales Tourism Council stated: “Having read your letter and studied the photo of your painting we think it is a view of Port Dinorwig (Y Felin Heli) opposite Moel y don and looking North East.” Port Dinorwig (Y Felin Heli) is situated in the county of Gwynedd opposite Moel y don, which is a flat coastal area of Anglesey. A paddle tug accompanies a boat into the distance. This peaceful scene is a very romanticised version of what the landscape would have looked like in 1846. Port Dinorwig was an industrial port through which the slate of the Dinorwig quarry at Llanberis was shihpped. In 1839-41 a stone quarry was built along the foreshore and a tramway constructed in 1824 running from the quarry, situated seven miles inland, was extended to run along the quay. This shows the artist making a conscious decision to include only elements to create a pleasant landscape that would appeal to the public. Wales is a recurring theme in Pyne’s work. Being based in Bristol, James Baker Pyne could easily travel to Wales to paint scenes such as the Menai Straits. This interest in Welsh scenery also follows the example of artists such as Richard Wilson (1752-1807) and Thomas Danby (1818-1886) who popularised Welsh landscapes through their paintings. This painting was not exhibited at the Royal Academy but Pyne showed a number of similar works depicting the British Landscape from 1836 including Morning – Windsor Castle from the Thames (no. 473, exhibited 1836); Nightingale Valley, Clifton (no. 239, exhibited 1838); A hostel at Castle Upnor, on the Medway and Sandwich, Kentish Coast (nos. 253 and 1163, both exhibited 1841). He exhibited almost exclusively at the Royal Society of British Artists, from 1841 when he became a member. He was later elected the society’s vice president. Pyne’s choice to exhibit the majority of his works at the Royal Society of British Artists reflects his commitments there as the Vice President. It is not clear whether this painting was exhibited at the Royal Society.

Text:: Having trained as an attorney, James Baker Pyne (1800-1870) taught himself painting and began working as a professional artist in his native Bristol. He exhibited seven works at the RA between 1836 and 1855, 28 at the BI 1828-63, and 194 at the Society of British Artists between 1833 and 1870. He painted mainly landscapes. Between 1839 and 1869 Pyne recorded his paintings in a series of account books, now kept at the National Art Library. This painting is probably number 179; "The Menai Straits". The location of the painting has been identified as a romanticised view of Port Dinorwig (Y Felin Heli), which is situated in the county of Gwynedd opposite the Moel y don in North Wales. This peaceful landscape is a very romanticised version of how the landscape would have looked in 1846 when this painting is dated. In this composition Pyne has left out a stone quarry that was built along the foreshore in 1839-41 and a tramway that ran between the quarry and the quay. This shows the artist making a conscious decision to include elements to create a composition that would appeal to a mid-nineteenth century audience.

Summary: Like most Bessbrook families the Blacks have a strong association with the linen trade. William's younger brother, Martin, was General Manager at Bessbrook before moving to Blacker's mill. His younger brother Jack was in the spinning and yarn sales end. William entered the mill in 1934 as assistant wages clerk. Prior to leaving school, William had been interviewed by the firm and a position allocated to him on the basis of his performance and abilities. Family reputation was all-important. William's father was held in high esteem and his children were consequently given positions of importance. The Bessbrook Spinning Company consisted of Bessbrook, Craigmore factory, Windsor (The Lake) factory and Glenmore bleach works. All of their produce was marketed by Richardsons Sons & Owden. After a brief period in Rosebank during WWII Mr Black was asked back to Bessbrook. He became weaving manager on the death of George Nelson in 1951. Bessbrook produced a wide range of goods; damasks and plains, household linens, furnishings fabrics and Aero linen. Craigmore produced the rougher type of fabric and tea-towels (average lea 18s). The lake specialised in the fine cambrics and Aero linens (average lea 80s). Sheetings, dress linens and damasks were woven in Bessbrook. Over the 3 sites there were some 1050 looms and between 8 & 900 employees. Weft yarn was occasionally bought from merchants such as Prestons, Cappers and Titteringtons. Bessbrook also did commission weaving, most notably for John Compton of Glenanne and Ewarts. Bessbrook and Windsor operated on coal fired boilers up into the 1950s. Craigmore also had a turbine. Investment was steady. The major cost was the electrification of the works. Quality control was extremely strict. Seconds were disposed of by the warehouse or sold off to the employees at a reduced rate. RSO did a large export business and appointed agents throughout the world. Bessbrook linen adorned the Queen Mary on her maiden voyage. All RSO damask had a lion holding a laurel wreath woven into each corner. The firm used the tradename `Richlin'. Bessbrook was a model village. The Richardson family owned the entire village and provided a number of amenities for the workforce. Bessbrook was not isolated from surrounding towns. Camlough and Newry were both within walking distance. The Company also constructed the Newry Bessbrook tramway, which called at Craigmore en route. Workers also came from surrounding towns to work in the mill. Labour relations in Bessbrook were exceptionally good and characterised by a family environment. In Craigmore the weavers were all women. In Bessbrook, the workforce was mixed because men were required to work the heavy sheeting and damask looms. Experienced weavers were selected to train new starts and were given an allowance to compensate them for their inevitable loss of earnings. Weavers took a great pride in their work. Several boasted that they had never been reprimanded or had cloth rejected. William remained with RSO until 1963. Over those years the market was changing. The closure of South America was particularly punishing. Price became all important and everything was done to save a fraction of a penny. Top quality cloth was no longer in demand. Although the firm remained traditional they became interested in hand painted rayon and cotton damask. Craigmore and Windsor closed in the 1950s. Bessbrook was sold to Ulster Weavers who ran it for 5 years or so before it finally closed.

Text:: Sydney Kyffin Greenslade (1866-1955) was articled to Edward Ashworth of Exeter in 1884. His first major project was assisting John Henry Eastwood on St Anne’s Cathedral, Leeds, where he was responsible for the detailed interior design work. His work there led to further engagements assisting T. H. Lyon on St Peter’s Cathedral, Adelaide, South Australia, and the South African War Memorial Library at Eton with L. K. Hall (1904). Greenslade was also the designer for the National Library of Wales at Aberystwyth (1909). The Roman Catholic St Anne’s Cathedral, Leeds, was designed in 1901-4 by John Henry Eastwood with the assistance of Sydney Kyffin Greenslade. It replaced ‘Old St Anne’s’, designed by John Child in 1838-39, which was demolished to make way for a new tramway due to be built through its site on Cookridge Street. Yorkshire architect Eastwood was chosen as the designer for the new cathedral over J. F. Bentley (architect of Westminster Cathedral) and John Kelly, a prolific local church architect. Eastwood had been former chief assistant to G. Aitchison and F. P. Cockerell, both of whom were also Yorkshiremen working in London. It was a challenging project that required the building to be constructed on a vastly reduced site whilst still fulfilling the needs of a cathedral layout, resulting in an unusually narrow nave with extensive basement offices. Building began in 1901 and the first mass was held on 1st May 1904, before either the high altar or tower were finished. This perspective of the cathedral’s apse shows the building’s style of muscular Gothic Revival interpreted in a modern mode, with unadorned wall planes and bold mouldings. Contemporary commentary was favourable, judging it as an example of the high standard of English ecclesiastical architecture. The Architectural Review (Vol. 13, 1906) noted: 'The leading article in The Brick-builder for January is Mr. Phillip’s second paper on ‘Modern Catholic Church Work in England’. The illustrations all point the finger of scorn at modern Roman Catholic work in other countries outside this singularly favored England. Mr Eastwood’s Cathedral in Leeds has been referred to many times, as have, indeed, nearly all other churches illustrated.' The cathedral was consecrated in 1924 and reordered two further times, in 1954 and 1960-4, which have significantly altered the interior.

Inscription description:: The number "500" appears several times on the box lid with a jigsaw piece to show that the jigsaw has five hundred pieces. The print uses both upper and lower case font, in different font sizes, boldness and colours. The examples provided occur on the front and bottom sides respectively, and certain items are repeated around the sides of the box lid such as the "500" and jigsaw piece aformentioned, a small rectangular image of the artist's original painting, the measurements of the jigsaw, the "KING" logo and the year "1923". The safety instructions of not allowing children under the age of three to use the jigsaw are repeated in nine languages including English, split into four on the top side and five on the bottom. The "KING" logo comprises of a yellow crown with "KING" below in yellow, on a dark blue background with a yellow edging; the overall shape of the logo is rectangular in portrait. The box lid is pink in colour in varying shades, and two crowns are located on the box lid in similar pink shades with one on the front and one on the bottom side. As the manufacturing company is based in The Netherlands, there are some discrepancies such as in the English language and in the custom of the jigsaw measurements; "COURTECY" should be "COURTESY" and "12,2" x 18,5"" should be "12'2" x 18'5"". Note: the jigsaw measurements in centimetres do not appear level, as the "1", "x" and "cm" of "31 x 47 cm" are smaller in font size than the other numbers in the quote mentioned and they are positioned towards the top parameter instead of along the bottom. There is also a barcode, the safety symbol to warn against children under three years of age not to use the jigsaw and the approval symbol "CE" from the European Commission which all appear on the top side of the box lid.
Inscription description:: The examples provided are mostly in upper case in different fonts, font sizes, boldness and colours. On the tramcar the quotes refer to the destination, tramcar number, an advert and part of the transport company's name respectively; note: the letter "T" and part of an "R" follow "LONDON" which suggests that the company provided was "LONDON TRANSPORT", but the second word is partially obscured by the location of the flower seller. On the omnibus the quotes refer to the route number, an advert, the omnibus company, another advert, the destination, the omnibus number, and the omnibus registration plate respectively. Note: the apostrophe of "OAKEY'S" faces towards the left instead of the right, and there are also further locations provided via the route to "PUTNEY COMMON". Note: the artist's painted signature is also included on the bottom left hand side of the original painting.

Inscription description:: The number "500" appears several times on the box lid with a jigsaw piece to show that the jigsaw has five hundred pieces. The print uses both upper and lower case font, in different font sizes, boldness and colours. The examples provided occur on the front and bottom sides respectively, and certain items are repeated around the sides of the box lid such as the "500" and jigsaw piece aformentioned, a small rectangular image of the artist's original painting, the measurements of the jigsaw, the "KING" logo and the year "1923". The safety instructions of not allowing children under the age of three to use the jigsaw are repeated in nine languages including English, split into four on the top side and five on the bottom. The "KING" logo comprises of a yellow crown with "KING" below in yellow, on a dark blue background with a yellow edging; the overall shape of the logo is rectangular in portrait. The box lid is pink in colour in varying shades, and two crowns are located on the box lid in similar pink shades with one on the front and one on the bottom side. As the manufacturing company is based in The Netherlands, there are some discrepancies such as in the English language and in the custom of the jigsaw measurements; "COURTECY" should be "COURTESY" and "12,2" x 18,5"" should be "12'2" x 18'5"". Note: the jigsaw measurements in centimetres do not appear level, as the "1", "x" and "cm" of "31 x 47 cm" are smaller in font size than the other numbers in the quote mentioned and they are positioned towards the top parameter instead of along the bottom. There is also a barcode, the safety symbol to warn against children under three years of age not to use the jigsaw and the approval symbol "CE" from the European Commission which all appear on the top side of the box lid.

Brief description:: This elaborate court mantua from the 1720s possibly belonged to Lady Rachel Morgan, the wife of Sir William Morgan of Tredegar House, near Newport. Lady Rachel was the daughter of the Duke of Devonshire, and brought with her a dowry of £20,000. In the 1790s her descendants invested in industrial projects. They opened coal mines and iron works on their land and built canals and tramways. The mantua consists of an open-fronted gown and a matching petticoat. The blue damask, which is heavily embroidered with silver thread, was woven at Spitalfields in London, an area once known for its silk weavers and mercers. Although the gown was altered during the 1800s, probably to wear as fancy dress, it remains an outstanding example of its kind.

'...This garment had been remade and worn as fancy dress, probably during the 19th century, and was displayed in the National Museum in the late 1920s in an incorrect form. In 1971 it was returned to its original form, with the help of Janet Arnold, who has published a charted pattern. The later stitching was removed, which involved unpicking bust darts and the removal of stitching where the train had been caught up in several places, presumably to hide the fact that part of the train had been cut away. The front skirt had to be arranged carefully to allow the silver embroidery to show all around the petticoat. The petticoat itself had not been altered.' Copy in accession file.
