George William Byers (1874 - 1957) was the first curator of the Harrogate Art Gallery. Until the Mercer Art Gallery opened in 1991, 'the Harrogate Art Gallery had been housed in the Library building in Victoria Avenue. IN MEMORIUM / GEORGE WILLIAM BYERS / Fellow of the Library Association / 1874 - 1957. Harrogate Public Library was opened in 1887 and G. W. Byers was appointed Assistant Librarian in 1888. He succeeded as Chief Librarian in 1892 and was in charge of the service for the next 46 years, a remarkable achievement.
