- IN MEMORIUM / GEORGE WILLIAM BYERS / Fellow of the Library Association / 1874 - 1957. Harrogate Public Library was opened in 1887 and G. W. Byers was appointed Assistant Librarian in 1888. He succeeded as Chief Librarian in 1892 and was in charge of the service for the next 46 years, a remarkable achievement.
