Brief description:
Designated Kar. 98 AZ during trials. 1908 -1918. used in World War I and issued to Heavy and Fortress Artillery, Pioneers and Cavalry. German Mauser G98 Karabiner 98az calibre 7.92 x 57mm dated 1917. Rifle [Gew98] introduced in 1898 the carbine version in 1908 Magazine capacity 5 rounds. This is a carbine version of the G98 the standard German rifle of WWI. It differs from the rifle by its shorter length and turned down bolt and the bolt recess in the stock. The rifle had a straight bolt which stuck out at the side. It also introduced the L shaped stacking rod at the muzzle used to interlock standing rifles into a pyramid. This carbine version was introduced in 1908. It was originally issued to cavalry and mountain troops and later became the weapon of choice of First War assault units or stormtroopers where its short length made it much handier than the full size rifle in trench warfare. It was being superceeded by newer carbines in 1923 though some continued in service in the Second World War. The G98 Kar 98a was refined to become the Kar 98b in 1923 and finally reworked to become the Kar 98K the standard German rifle of World War 2.
