Great coat, other ranks, Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, worn by Superintending Forewoman Margaret A Hardman, 1917 (c). Khaki milled wool serge, single-breasted coat with mock tortoiseshell buttons. Known as a ‘dirty smock’, this work coat was worn over the uniform when undertaking roles or tasks that could damage or soil the uniform underneath.
