Comments:
Framed. Signed top right. Although he spent most of his scholarly career at Cambridge, Prof. Leonard Wilson Forster (1913-1997) served as Professor of German at University College London from 1950 until 1961. According to John Flood (ODNB), he "represented all that was best in British scholarship: he was a man of fearsome intellect and immense erudition, yet he wore his learning lightly, and in his scholarship as in his life he was a model of urbanity, elegance, and sheer style". Between 1986 and 1990 he was president of the English Goethe Society, whose papers are held at the University of London's Institute of Modern Languages Research.
