Object name(s):
Sweetheart Pincushion
Brief description:
As the First World War raged across Europe, a Newton Abbot lady stitched this decorative pincushion for her beloved who was serving in France as a Royal Horse Artillery Signalman. As well as best wishes and messages beseeching the recipient to remember them, the cushion features the Royal Standard on the crossed flags. Embroidered heart-shaped cushions became a trend during the war. Often made from a kit, they are commonly referred to as sweetheart pincushions. This example is somewhat unusual as our record shows it was made by a woman as a gift to a soldier, whereas they were more often made by injured soldiers during their recovery.
