Brief description:
Home Service pattern helmet, Major Elwyn Pleydell Jones, Army Service Corps, 1901-1914. This pattern helmet was introduced in 1878 and used for full dress until the outbreak of the First World War. Made of cork and covered in blue wool cloth, they could be fitted with either a spike or a ball top fitting. Regiments and Corps using horses, including the Army Service Corps always used a ball top fitting to prevent injuries to horses while adjusting saddles or harness.
