- Brief description:
- Key believed to be a rail motor run off key between New Bridge and Levisham. The key is inscribed New Bridge Quarry Box - Levisham. It is understood the railway line to the Quarry left the main Whitby to Pickering line on Pickering side of the signal box, ran behind the current Signal box (there is now a garden belonging to the house behind the SB) up to the Quarry. It is believed the key, found as part of the late Chris Dickerson's possessions by his wife Jo who has donated the item to the NYMRT, was used prior to the line between Pickering and Levisham becoming a single line. The change to one line was so that the rails from one line could be taken up and used for the 1st World War and was therefore circa 1916. The key was so that when a rail motor was to run off from the main line, the key was used to lock the line behind it. It would be interesting to find out more about this artefact.
