Study of a nude female. An unfinished full-length study of a seated, young, nude, brunette woman. She is viewed side-on, in profile, resting her forearms on her thighs and slightly raising her head to glance upwards. A dark green and red background creates a chiaroscuro effect. Thinly applied paint with glazes. Damage to corners of canvas

Painter. Started as an apprentice in printing works. Studied at the Royal Academy Schools, 1807, and under his uncle Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) for a year. He visited Italy between 1822 and 1824 but was based mainly in London. He painted historical and mythological subjects and, particularly, the female nude. His works of the latter subject were occasionally criticised for alleged indecency

The following is a quote from correspondence from Henry Bird to David Tinker: ''There was a College Collection.... kept in a room that was always locked except on rare occasions.... I also remember pulling out a painting from behind a book-case, brushing off a very thick layer of dust & disclosing an Etty life-study.'' Bird lectured in art history at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth from 1936-1941.
