- Sterling (1879-1958), gramophone company manager and industrialist, collected first and fine editions of English literature, which he gave to the University of London in 1956 as the Sterling Library. Further gifts to the University included a trust fund to purchase extra library books, a set of eighteenth-century oil portraits which had formerly belonged to Lord Chesterfield, and a room within Senate House LIbrary. Portrait signed and dated '37. In gilt gesso frame.
