- Anti-riot shield, Universal pattern, 1975 (c). Perspex with steel handles and foam arm guard. The British Army became experienced in riot control during its service in Northern Ireland. Shields were carried as protection from thrown stones and bottles. This type of shield replaced the earlier metal types with a mesh visor; they were lighter and had greater visibility in use.
