Brief description:

Bronze coloured metal medal. On the obverse central to the design is a left facing bust of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught (1850-1942) (see notes below). He is wearing a field marshal uniform with robes of the Order of St John and wearing a badge of the Knight of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem surmounted by a crown and suspended from a ribbon (see notes below). Encircling this is relief text reading 'ARTHVRVS.CONN:DVX.MAG:PRIOR.IN.BRITT:OMN:OD:HOSP:S:IOHIS:HIER:'. On the reverse central to the design is a relief depiction of a ship at sea with sails bearing a Maltese cross and a ?St. George's cross with the Royal crest, being an Imperial crown surmounted by a lion. Encircling the design is relief text reading 'ANNO PEREGRINATIONIS ET NOVAE CARTAE. / MCMXXVI.'.

Comments:

Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught (1850-1942) was Queen Victoria's seventh child. He had a military career, beginning with his time at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich London from 1866 to 1868. He went on to serve several times abroad and held high positions within the military including Commander-in-Chief of both Ireland and the Mediterranean as well as Governor General of Canada. He was appointed a Knight of Justice for The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem (Order of St. John) in c. 1896 as well as obtaining other titles within the Order. He was made Grand Prior for the Order between 1910 and 1939. He was also a freemason, having been initiated on 24th Mar 1874, into Prince of Wales’s Lodge, No. 259.

The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem (Order of St. John) was granted a charter in 1888 by Queen Victoria, establishing it as an Order of Chivalry of the British Crown. Its origins stem from the founding of a hospital in Jerusalem in 1080.
