Gold coloured metal medal. On the obverse central to the design is a relief left facing bust of Jozsef Balassa (1864-1945) (see notes below). On the left of the bust is relief text reading '1918'. Encircling this is relief text reading 'DR BALASSA JOZSEF ∴ TUDOMANY . TANITAS . TARSADALOM.'. The reverse is blank.

The Hungarian text 'DR BALASSA JOZSEF ∴ TUDOMANY . TANITA'S . TARSADALOM.' translates as 'DR BALASSA, JOZSEF, TEACHING IN SCIENCE AND SOCIETY'.

The maker's mark 'Gárdos' belongs to the medallist.
