- Gold plated silver shield infilled with coloured enamels and quartered the top left quarter is the civic coat of arms of Bath being a sword on battlements with wavy lines behind the top right quarter is the civic coat of arms of Bridgwater being a castle the bottom right corner is the civic coat of arms of Wells, being a tree with three wells and the bottom left corner is the civic coat of arms of Taunton being a crown and a winged head. The shield is pinned to a roundel in gold plated silver and infilled with red enamel with text reading 'SOMERSET MASTERS LODGE / FOUNDER' and the whole is pinned to a device of silver rays punctuated with gilded points. - Comments:
- Sir Edward Letchworth was a prominent Freemason at the turn of the 19th Century. He served as Grand Secretary from 1892 until just before his death, and consecrated over 400 lodges and chapters, more than any previous Grand Officer. Prior to this he was a Junior Grand Deacon and Provincial Grand Registrar of Middlesex. He was Past Master of several lodges, including Lodge of Antiquity, No. 2. He was also heavily involved in Royal Arch and Mark Masonry as well as several other additional degrees. Letchworth trained and practiced as a solicitor and was appointed Chief Steward of Manors to the Queen. He was knighted in 1902. He was also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and Governor of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital.
