Brief description:
(USA designation) are turkish converted Mauser M93, M98 and M1903 rifles. Turkish Mauser Gewehr Gew98 7.62 x57mm bolt action rifle dated 1918. The Gew98 was introduced in 1898 for the 7.65mm cartridge used in the Mauser Model 1888 but this was soon superceeded by the 7.9 x 82.5mm cartridge. In 1903 a new cartridge was introduced the 7.92 x 57mm S-Geschoss S-Patrone andit was the latter round that went on to be used through two world wars. Rounds were carried in a Mannlicher style 5 round magazine fed by stripper clips. The bolt mechanism is considered to be one of the best in the world and the design which was refined in this rifle is now the standard design used in many current sporting rifles. The Gew98 was exported to many countries and built under licence in others. Production ran from 1898 up until the end of the First War in 1918. EH comment : A Turkish-made version of the standard German Mauser 98, with altered bolt-action, made in Ankara in 1942.
