- Object name(s):
- Royal Wax Seal
- Brief description:
- This is the Great Seal of the Realm of Queen Victoria; it was attached to documents that were endorsed by the monarch and had therefore received the ‘royal seal of approval’. The Latin inscription, Victoria Dei Gratia Britanniarum Regina Fidei Defensor, translates to: Victoria, by the grace of God, Queen of the Britains, Defender of the Faith. Since the Middle Ages, royalty and other important families have had their own seals engraved as stamps to create a unique impression in melted wax on documents and letters. An unbroken wax seal was proof that a delivered letter had not been read by anyone since leaving the sender’s hand circa 1840.
