Object name(s):
Checkers Set
Brief description:
This compact game of checkers (the American name for the popular board game of draughts) was given to David, a Newton Abbot boy, by one of the United States construction team working on the military hospital at Stover during the Second World War. The case has a stain from a tea mug, which shows it was well used by David, who must have been envied by his friends as he was also given a set of dominoes! The generosity of the U.S. soldiers during their time in Newton Abbot is well known: chocolates, cigarettes, and fine nylon stockings were regularly distributed for any kindness shown to the troops by local people.
