In the 1903 reforms of the Indian Army the 64th Pioneers was created from the 4th Madras Pioneers, itself a successor unit of the 5th Battalion Coast Sepoys, formed in 1758. The elephant insignia dates from 1803 when the 1st Battalion, 4th Regiment of Madras Native Infantry From the Field Marshal Sir John Chapple Indian Army Collection.
