Brief description:
Dame Mary Colvin joined the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY) in 1938, transferring to the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) on the outbreak of the Second World War. She initially joined the ATS as a driver, but in 1943 was put in charge of a Central Ordnance Depot ATS Group at Weedon in Northamptonshire. On its disbandment in 1949, Colvin supervised the transfer of members of the ATS to the newly formed Women’s Royal Army Corps (WRAC). She served as Director of the WRAC from 1957 until her retirement from the British Army in 1961.
