Almost nothing is known about this artist. The painting shows visitors in the North room of the Barry block, a suite of sumptuously decorated rooms opened at the National Gallery in 1876. This palatial space was always intended for the display of large-scale works of art and today holds 17th-century Italian Baroque paintings.
