Lodge La Tolerance was founded in 1847 in London, England with the number 784. In 1894 the number was changed to 538. The lodge was formed of French freemasons who had come to England in the late nineteenth century.
Comments:
The French text 'MÉDAILLE DE FONDATEUR DE LA LOGE FRANÇAISE LA TOLÉRANCE NO. 784 INSTITUÉE À LONDRES 22 JANVIER 1847' translates as 'Founder's medal of the French lodge La Tolerance, No. 784. Instituted in London on 22nd Januar, 1847'.
Comments:
As most items are manufactured in the same year they are presented, date of manufacture for this medal is taken to be the same as its presentation date. Please note this manufacture date is speculative as occasionally items are manufactured before or even after the date of presentation.
Comments:
The cataloguing of the medal collection at the Library and Museum of Freemasonry was supported by a grant from Arts Council England in 2013.
