- Object name(s):
- Toddler’s Shoe
- Brief description:
- Newton Abbot has had a leather industry since the 1700s and there have always been shoe-makers in the town. This tiny leather shoe was uncovered in a field in Wolborough. At just 120mm long, it clearly belonged to a young child. It is amazing that it has survived all these years! Although this example looks very well-worn and heavily scuffed, it’s owner probably suffered a good telling off for losing it; prior to mechanisation in the 1870s, shoes were an expensive, hand-made item that many working families in the eighteenth century struggled to afford.
