- This elegant pair of black leather lace up ice skates, size 51/2, were found in one of the outbuildings of a house in Kingskerswell and are thought to date to the Edwardian period. Ice skating was both a sport and leisure activity in Victorian and Edwardian England. It was not uncommon for lakes to freeze over during the winter months, turning them into natural ice rinks. This pair of ladies’ skates may well have been used during a cold spell on Stover Lake. In days gone by, before the more stringent health and safety regulations we live by today, the lake was routinely opened up to the public if it iced over
