- Trade badge, Motor Transport Driver, Women’s Royal Army Corps, 1960 (c). Gold embroidered five-pointed star on beech brown cloth. Motor Transport Driver trade badge for the Women’s Royal Army Corps (WRAC) for wear on No 1 Dress uniform, 1960 (c). Women were not allowed to drive for the British Army until World War Two (1939-1945). The Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) was formed in 1938 specifically for women to serve in support roles. Even then, it was not until a couple of years into the War before women’s roles were expanded to include driving and despatch riders.
