- Brief description:
- Coiled fibre plate made by Hausa, query from Gombe, North Nigeria, and traded widely throughout Nigeria, used as food plates and to display market goods, Hausaland, possibly Zaria town. The plate is constructed from coiled and dyed palm fibres that have been wrapped around coiled palm ribs. Each turn of the coiled palm fibres is secured by binding or stitching it to the previous one. The plate is highly decorative and combines the use three different colours, cream, dark brown, and orange/red in order to create contrasting patterns. The pattern is designed around a central circle of orange/red that is surrounded by a six pointed star-shape whose arms extend outwards towards the rim of the plate. The points are woven using alternating colours. Each point has a lozenge-shaped motif situated in its centre which has been woven using an alternating colour. The central pattern is bordered by a double row of dark brown and a triple row of cream. The rim is decorated with alternating bands of dark brown and orange/red which have been woven using a step motif.
