- Object name(s):
- Sampler
- Brief description:
- Needlework sampler worked by Ann Bennett. The sampler has the letters of the alphabet worked in cross stitch followed by the girl's name and 'Rugby 1826'. Such samplers were not uncommon for the period. They were often worked by young girls, and feature either the letters of the alphabet or a religious/moral text or both. They were usually also dated and bore the name of the girl whose work it was. Up until the late twentieth century it was considered important girls should be taught needlework. Sampler is stitched onto a folded piece of cardboard.
