Title:
On the Northumbrian Cliffs
Object name(s):
watercolour
Brief description:
The lives of the rural poor were a popular subject in Victorian painting. Marsh moved to live among a colony of artists at Cullercoats on the Northumbrian coast to capture the character of the fishermen and fishwives, whose lives there were lived in such stark contrast to the urban inhabitants of nearby Newcastle. In his depiction of this group of women and girls, Marsh emphasises the utilitarian nature of their dark garments, layers of shawls wrapped tightly around their bodies to protect them from the icy wind.
