- Object name(s):
- Bren Gun Mk I with aluminium flash hider.. Deactivated. Calibre .303 Magazine 30 rounds Introduced 1936
- Brief description:
- light machine gun. A British adaption of the Czechoslovakian VS26. Very accurate and reliable with a low rate of fire this has been described as the best light machine gun of WWII. Post war they were converted to 7.62mm and continue to be used in 2008 in India. It was capable of both automatic and single shot fire. The carrying handle, while it could be used to carry the gun and is placed at the centre of gravity was actually designed to allow overheated barrels to be changed rapidly without burning the users hands. Gunner Len Stockill felt that the accuracy was overrated and preferred a more open and peppering pattern though he agreed that one useful attribute of bullets hitting the same mark was the ability to punch holes through brick walls.
