Brief description:
Coiled fibre plate, decorated with red, buff, black and green, made by Hausa, query from Gombe, North Nigeria, and traded widely throughout Nigeria, used as food plates and to display market goods, Hausaland, possibly Zaria town. The plate is constructed from coiled and dyed palm fibres that have been wrapped around coiled palm ribs. Each turn of the coiled palm fibres is secured by binding or stitching it to the previous one. The plate is highly decorative and combines the use three different colours, cream, dark brown, and orange/red in order to create contrasting patterns. The pattern is designed around a central circle of orange/red which has an alternating border of dark brown and cream. The central motif is surrounded by a twelve pointed star-shape woven using alternating colours: three dark brown, one cream, one orange/red followed by one cream etc. The rest of the plate’s ground is decorated with lozenge shapes woven using alternating colours including two in green. The centre of each lozenge is highlighted with a lozenge-shaped motif that are bordered by three rows of dark brown and three rows of cream. The border is bi-sected at opposite points around the plate’s circumference by two inverted triangles that intrude into the border and background. Both triangles are decorated using alternating coloured and nested triangles. The rim is decorated using alternating bands of dark brown and cream which are arranged in sloping step motifs.
