- Professor Alexander Merrie Hardie was born in Aberdeen and studied classic then engineering at Aberdeen University. Prof. Hardie worked for Metropolitan Vickers in Manchester before WWII and became friends with Jimmie Finniecomb, whose wife originated from Aberdeen. This etching was a gift to Alice Finniecomb in the 1930s. During the Second World War Prof. Hardie joined the RAF and after the war became Professor of Engineering at Brunel University. He retired to Cromarty, where he became well known as an artist.
