- Person's biographical note:
- Painter and illustrator. Son of a portrait painter who died in 1857 before he could establish much recognition. Studied at Manchester School of Art, 1859-60, but received little formal painting tuition thereafter. Exhibited at the Dudley Gallery in 1866 and subsequently, was elected an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1867. His paintings, mostly of animals and rural scenes, were exhibited and well received over the course of his career. In the late 1860s he began making illustrations to be engraved for weekly magazines, in 1869 becoming chief equestrian artist for the Graphic Magazine. He moved to Surrey in 1871 to be closer to the London art scene, and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1874-93. He continued to exhibit in major galleries across the UK and in Paris, recognised for his fine attention to detail
