Sidney Mercer was a versatile painter, designer, cartoonist, illustrator and muralist, who ran an advertising agency in Harrogate. This watercolour was a preparatory sketch for one of two murals with Venetian themes that Mercer painted in the Royal Hall in the early 1950s, now no longer on view.
