Historical significance: Winner of the Design Centre Award in 1971. Worldwide Paterson is best known for the high quality darkroom equipment it manufactures here in the UK. For nearly sixty years Paterson have specialised in the manufacture and supply of equipment for the manual processing of silver based photographic film and paper. Paterson darkroom products are in use all over the world in schools, colleges, and professional and enthusiast’s darkrooms. The comprehensive range of products includes film developing tanks, measuring graduates, enlarger accessories, film and print washing equipment and 35mm and roll film enlargers. All of the darkroom plastics are manufactured in Paterson’s own factory in the UK.

CoID AWARDS 1971 CONSUMER GOODS Last year was not a vintage one for the traditional areas of domestic design, but the judges of the consumer goods section of the 1971 CoID Design Awards have produced evidence that the standard of design in areas of industry as far apart as powerboats, photographic equipment and pedestrian bridges has now reached international levels. The awards include a range of padlocks which are claimed to be the most secure in the world and several winning products that are achieving important export successes, while three awards go to products which exploit unique properties of plastics. Concord Lighting International maintains its record as the leading CoID Design Award-winner by earning its sixth award. The judges were Leslie Julius (chairman), managing director of Hille and member of Council, CoID; Joanne Brogden, reader at the school of fashion design, Royal College of Art; Peter Glynn Smith, consultant industrial designer; Derek Phillips, architect and lighting consultant; and Norman Stevenson, consultant designer.
