- Pompilia is the victim of uxoricide for supposed adultery in Robert Browning's narrative poem The Ring and the Book (1868-9), the first edition of which is held at Senate House Library. Downing is connected with the University of London, having studied at the Slade School (1892-3). Sculpture exhibited by the artist at the Royal Academy in 1899, no. 1895.
