Brief description:
Once located at a specially built, state of the art operating room at Hoare Down Ilfracombe. This was opened in 1959 and run by the GPO. It was operated by ten members of staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This apparatus sent and received messages between ships, agents and ship owners and emergency calls were relayed to other neighbouring ships and rescue services. The station closed in 1986. The morse code function still works but no longer transmits its messages.
