Title:
August 12, 1988
Object name(s):
gouache
Brief description:
[previous notes]: abstract. In 1956, Heron saw an exhibition of paintings by the American Abstract Expressionists at the Tate Gallery in London, and was inspired to make the move into abstraction in his own art. He was impressed by the flatness and colour of the American paintings. This picture is small, and was painted in gouache more than 30 years later, but the impact of Heron's first sight of abstraction is still there, in the intensity of colour and the soft fluidity of the forms as they dissolve and bleed into each other.
Collection:
Mercer Art Gallery
Comments:
See file for newspaper cuttings from The Times, The Guardian, etc. with contextual information about Heron. This image illustrated in 'The People's Choice' by Sheila Asante, published by the Mercer Art Gallery, 2013. p.8 (and on the front cover).
