Brief description:
Imperial typewriter, Auxiliary Territorial Service, 1935 (c). The Imperial Typewriter Company, based in Leicester, was founded in 1911 by Hidalgo Moya. The Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) was formed in 1938 as a voluntary service for women and was attached to the Territorial Army. ATS personnel were initially limited to roles such as clerks, cooks, orderlies, storekeepers and drivers. The ATS was merged into the Women’s Royal Army Corps in 1949.
