- Object name(s):
- Odeon Souvenir
- Brief description:
- This programme was produced for the debut screening of the film Anna Karenina (starring Greta Garbo) to celebrate the opening of the Odeon on 17th February 1936. The cinema was located off Wolborough Street, but eventually closed its doors in July 1972. Since the late 19th century Newton Abbot has been home to three other cinemas: the Alexandra (1890 – present); the Empire Picture House (1911 – 1929); and the Imperial Electric Cinema (1913 – 1962). The Odeon’s comparatively short lifespan could be due to never having expanded its events listings to include plays and music concerts like the others did.
