Brief description:
Coiled fibre plate made by the Hausa, query from Gombe, North Nigeria, and traded widely throughout Nigeria, used as food plates and to display market goods, Hausaland, possibly Zaria town. The plate is constructed from coiled and dyed palm fibres that have been wrapped around coiled palm ribs. Each turn of the coiled palm fibres is secured by binding or stitching it to the previous one. The plate is highly decorative and combines the use three different colours, cream, dark brown, and orange/red in order to create contrasting patterns. The pattern consists of an orange/red centre bordered by a double row of dark brown which is surrounded by a twelve pointed star-shape. The arms extend outwards towards the rim of the plate and are woven using alternating colours. In the centre of each arm there is a lozenge-shaped motif picked out in a contrasting colour to the main ground. Each arm is also bordered by three rows of alternating cream and dark brown. Between each arm there is a lozenge-shaped motif woven using alternating and contrasting colours to the other elements. In the centre of each lozenge there is a double lozenge motif woven using contrasting colours to the ground. The triangular-shapes between each lozenge are also woven with a central triangular-shaped motif using alternating colours to the ground. The outermost triangular motifs which infill between the lozenges are decorated with delineated nested triangles woven using alternating and contrasting colours. The main pattern is bordered by a double row of dark brown and a double row of cream. The rim is woven using alternating dark brown bands and orange/red step patterns.
