The Kalinka National Folk Dance Ensemble come from a town called Vladimir, 120 miles north-east of Moscow, which is twinned with Hackney. This year they make their first visit to the Hackney Empire. Since their beginning in 1968, as a small folk dance group in the Social Club of their Electrical Components factory in Vladimir, they have gone from strength to strength. They have won many festival awards and have gained international recognition. Kalinka have toured Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria and Romania and performed at the 1980 Olympic Game in Moscow.
