The 1911 Census records that Francis James Henry Emmatt ran a ‘dress manufacturing establishment’ on Westmoreland Street. In March 1915,in the early stages of World War One,Emmatt and Son of Westmoreland St posted a notice in the Harrogate Herald, where they appealed for ‘Bodice Hands Coat Hands, assistants generally and apprentices. Also Machinist wanted’.The firm kept posting appeals for persons with various dressmaking skills in the newspaper occasionally in 1917.The Kelly’s Directory of West Riding of Yorkshire for 1927 stated on page 448 that Emmatt and Son,ladies’ tailors occupied 2&4 Westmoreland Street in Harrogate. In September 1939,when the UK was subjected to a ‘census’ so that National Registration ID cards could be issued, Frank Raymond Emmatt(Francis James H.Emmatt's son),was living at 2 Westmoreland Street. He was 64 years old and stated he was a widower and a retired silk merchant.Back in 1911,he worked with his father as a salesman in the business. Kellys Directory Harrogate 1945(Mercer Gallery’s own Ref library) Page 145 Lists Jeffrey Goff ‘Cycle Engineer’ and also Frank R Emmatt both under 2 Westmoreland Street (Research by Jonathan Fenny,Jan 2019)
